Improving Global Weather Prediction in GFDL SHiELD Through an Upgraded GFDL Cloud Microphysics Scheme

چکیده
We describe the third version of Geophysical Fluid Dynamics Laboratory cloud microphysics scheme (GFDL MP v3) implemented in System for High-resolution prediction on Earth-to-Local Domains (SHiELD). Compared to GFDL v2, v3 is entirely reorganized, optimized, and modularized into functions. The particle size distribution (PSD) all hydrometeor categories redefined better mimic observations, droplet number concentration (CDNC) calculated from Modern-Era Retrospective analysis Research Applications, 2 (MERRA2) aerosol data. In addition, has been redesigned so processes use PSD ensure overall consistency easily permit introduction new PSDs microphysical processes. A year's worth global 13-km, 10-day weather forecasts were performed with MP. significantly improves SHiELD's predictions geopotential height, air temperature, specific humidity Troposphere, as well high, middle total fractions liquid water path. are improved even further by reanalysis data calculate CDNC, also using more realistic available v3. However, upgrade shows little impact precipitation prediction. Degradations caused discussed provide a guide future development.

Two-moment bulk stratiform cloud microphysics in the GFDL AM3 GCM: description, evaluation, and sensitivity tests
A new stratiform cloud scheme including a twomoment bulk microphysics module, a cloud cover parameterization allowing ice supersaturation, and an ice nucleation parameterization has been implemented into the recently developed GFDL AM3 general circulation model (GCM) as part of an effort to treat aerosol-cloud-radiation interactions more realistically. Unlike the original scheme, the new scheme...
متن کاملGFDL Ocean General Circulation Model Collaborators
Ocean general circulation models (OGCMs) are important tools for climatological research. These models approximate the solution to the governing equations to predict horizontal velocity components, temperature, salinity, and other chosen parameters. The GFDL OGCM, or Modular Ocean Model (MOM), is an example of such a code. This code was originally developed at the Geophysical Fluids Dynamics La...
متن کاملIndian Ocean Variability in the GFDL Coupled Climate Model
The interannual variability of the Indian Ocean, with particular focus on the Indian Ocean dipole/zonal mode (IODZM), is investigated in a 250-yr simulation of the GFDL coupled global general circulation model (CGCM). The CGCM successfully reproduces many fundamental characteristics of the climate system of the Indian Ocean. The character of the IODZM is explored, as are relationships between p...
متن کاملThe Impact of Dropwindsonde Data on GFDL Hurricane Model Forecasts Using Global Analyses
The National Centers for Environmental Prediction (NCEP) and the Hurricane Research Division (HRD) of NOAA have collaborated to postprocess Omega dropwindsonde (ODW) data into the NCEP operational global analysis system for a series of 14 cases of Atlantic hurricanes (or tropical storms) from 1982 to 1989. Objective analyses were constructed with and without ingested ODW data by the NCEP operat...
متن کاملThe GFDL Hurricane Prediction System and Its Performance in the 1995 Hurricane Season
The Geophysical Fluid Dynamics Laboratory (GFDL) Hurricane Prediction System was adopted by the U.S. National Weather Service as an operational hurricane prediction model in the 1995 hurricane season. The framework of the prediction model is described with emphasis on its unique features. The model uses a multiply nested movable mesh system to depict the interior structure of tropical cyclones....
